Jacqueline Mitton’s career has been in communicating science to the public. Her specialist subject is astronomy, and she has degrees in physics and astronomy from Oxford and Cambridge universities. Though now mostly retired, she continues to write and to act as a consultant to publishers of children’s books.

Alongside her professional work, Jacqueline has long been involved in health matters, starting as a member of a local Health Authority. Subsequently she spent almost 20 years in health regulation as a chair of fitness to practise panels, most recently for the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Since 2020 she has been a public member of an advisory committee for the NIHR’s Research for Patient Benefit grant programme.

As someone living with glaucoma, she has taken a particular interest in eye health. She is a former vice-chair of the Trustees of Glaucoma UK and continues to be involved with the charity’s work on a voluntary basis.
